Statement on Mr Kirubairajah Tharmarajah (‘Dr Kiru’)

09 November 2018

The Office of the Health Ombudsman (OHO) is currently investigating a matter in relation to health services provided by Mr Kirubairajah Tharmarajah (also known as ‘Doctor Kiru’) at a number of locations in Queensland.

Mr Tharmarajah does not hold registration as a medical practitioner in Australia.

Health Ombudsman Andrew Brown became aware of the matter in October and, to protect public health and safety, issued an interim prohibition order to Mr Tharmarajah on 17 October 2018.

This order means Mr Tharmarajah is prohibited from providing any health service, paid or otherwise, in a clinical or non-clinical capacity. Compliance with this order is monitored by the OHO.

The OHO has been working with Queensland Health to address the issues and has identified patients who received treatment from Mr Tharmarajah between 1 May and 16 October 2018. These patients have been contacted directly.

Patients are advised to consider attending an alternative medical practitioner if concerned about their health and safety or the treatment they received.

Any member of public who has received health services or treatment from Mr Tharmarajah (practising as ‘Dr Kiru’) between these dates and who has not been contacted by the OHO is advised to contact the office directly on 133 646 or at www.oho.qld.gov.au/make-a-complaint.

No further comment can be made on matters currently under investigation to protect the privacy of all parties involved.
